Favicon.ico

Add my site to your favourites and what do you see. Instead of the boring old IE 5 favourites icon you will see my own personal icon. My site probably now stands out from the rest, which is exceptionally useful when an old visitor is looking for my site. Would you like your site to stand out from the rest? Read on...

The first step is to create an icon. Easier said than done. I could not find any freeware icon creators out there, so I had trouble creating my own icon, especially as I didn't want to fork out £30 or $50 for an icon creator which I was only going to use once! So I carried on searching for a long long time, then I saw what I wanted.

If I could not have an icon creator, I may as well have the next best thing - a .bmp to .ico converter. The guy who created this program should made the president or something. It is completely free and totally useful. Click here for more information.

Everybody who has "Windows" has "Paint". Just create your icon as a bitmap, save and then convert. It is as easy as that. But you have to the follow the limitations of the size and type. (i.e it will only convert if 32x32 or 16x16 pixels, and 16 color or 256 color not 24bit Bitmap etc)

Assuming you now have your .ico file, you now need to save it as: "favicon.ico" (If you use BMP2ICO then use the quotation marks as well)

Upload it to your website into any directory which has viewable HTML files, and Wahey! Every time some one adds your site to their favourites, your icon appears next to your web site URL!

It's fairly simple, but it is a nice touch and will give your viewers a recognizable image when they look for your site yet not a lot of people know about it. Soon everyone will have one, so make the most of the fact your site will stand out from the rest...
